Knights in shining armour, castle walls sparkling in the sunshine and acres of glorious grounds to explore. Joanne Robinson offers one of her favourite family days out in the Dorset sunshine
Lulworth Castle has it all; gorgeous grounds, an animal park, play area, lots of places to picnic and a quite magnificent castle. It is simply an ideal location for a great family day out in the Dorset. The Lulworth estate stands just a few miles from the remarkable World Heritage Jurassic Coast and is set in 12,000 acres of beautiful rolling parkland, woods and farmland. The castle itself is magnificent. The exterior has changed very little over the last 400 years and its stunning outer walls dominate the landscape. Tragically, the interior of the castle was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1929, which left the building a virtual ruin. Years of hard work have transformed the gutted interior and it was reopened to the public in 1998. There’s always a children’s quiz to keep even the tiniest visitor interested whilst you look around the castle and there’s a great children’s activity room packed with jolly things to keep little hands busy. Once you’ve had a peek around the castle there’s so much to do in the grounds that you can easily fill a delightful summer day. You’re welcome to picnic wherever you want in the grounds and there’s a lovely woodland trail, a children’s adventure playground and an animal farm. During summer you’ll also find a pitch and putt and a bouncy castle. There’s plenty of parking, a licensed café in the old stables and a lovely shop.
The Castle and park are open Sunday to Friday (NB closed on Saturdays) 10.30am – 6pm. The castle is also closed to the public from 23 – 27 July
Children under 4 are free!
It’s well worth checking out Lulworth Castle’s special events as they are included in the normal ticket price and will make a pleasant day out even more memorable. Here are a couple of our favourites:
Pirate Festival (24 – 29 May): Swashbuckling fun with 6 days of Pirate themed activities in the Castle and Park. You’ll be able to wander through the Pirates’ encampment and learn more about how they lived and fought. Quizzes, games, story telling, face painting and lots more pirate themed activities will fill the Castle. There will also be on the spot prizes for the best pirate costumes!
Spectacular Summer Jousting Shows and Medieval Village (29 July – 31 Aug, Sun – Fri, NB closed on Saturdays) Come to Lulworth Castle in August and be transported back to the colourful Middle Ages. Wander around the medieval village, meet the jester, hear stories and watch the Knights of Lulworth perform stunts, combat and medieval games; there’s nothing like a nice bit of jousting to liven up your picnic!
