obbin Sewing School is a little haven in Winchester, offering sewing classes from skilled tutors to anyone who loves to sew and wants to learn more.
From the terrified beginner to the talented seamstress, their lovely studio provides a place of warmth - a quiet hideaway from the bustle of your busy family life. Go in, be inspired, have an enjoyable day out and leave with a few tricks up your sleeve!
Alison Lee, co-founder says: “ If you fancy time out to make your own gorgeous clothes for little ones, want to create handmade gifts to warm the heart, or time to give your home a makeover, you’ve come to the right place. From dressmaking, interiors, pattern cutting, crafts and accessories - Bobbin's got the lot, and will be adding more courses throughout the year"
Wendy Wyatt, co-founder of Bobbin adds: “We don’t just want folks to have a lovely day out; we also want to inspire people to make for business and pleasure. After I had my children, I realised it would be impossible for both my husband and I to juggle two London careers plus two small children. We wanted to find a way to earn money by creating lovely things and also juggle family commitments. I decided to base myself at home and start selling online as there are so many opportunities now.”
Bobbin is especially appealing to people who would like to sell online but don’t know where to start, or who fancy selling at craft fairs and design markets. The school hopes to create a momentum of local sewing folk who all successfully sell their handmade goods either online, at local events, markets or in independent shops.
Through their ‘Bobbin Social’ blog & special events, they also offer free support and advice to Bobbin Social members who want to take the plunge and sell. Perhaps you need a buddy to share costs with or run a stall together? Maybe you need to talk to someone that has sold online and can offer tips, or you want to know where to source supplies? Bobbin Social members are on hand to help with all your sewing needs.
Interview with the founders of Bobbin
Why did you create Bobbin?
Surprisingly, in spite of demand, there are very few places to learn to sew around Winchester. They tend to be in temporary spaces, usually in village halls and are often a little overcrowded. We’ve heard of guerilla sewing nights popping up in village halls, but sadly they've stopped - the volunteers found it hard to cope with the sheer numbers of people attending. We wanted to create a permanent studio in central Winchester - somewhere to learn in a small group and also have lovely space to relax and be creative.
Who set up Bobbin?
Alison Lee & Wendy Wyatt. Alison is a graduate of Central St Martin’s in knitwear design, and has worked as a freelance knitwear designer for the last fifteen years, and is also the founder of Brassey Road Studio - a working artist studio in Winchester. Wendy has been sewing for over 20 years and previously worked in London as an advisor to the Mayor on fashion industry strategy, working closely with the British Fashion Council and London Fashion Week.
Who are your tutors?
We have some great tutors who have over 30 years experience teaching. Our tutors Debbie Frost and Dalia Vainorious, are handpicked because they’re talented, adore what they do, love teaching and we loved them teaching us! Don’t be afraid - get involved and get sewing. We believe our best moments are borne of slowing down, and that’s the secret to successful sewing.
