Churcher’s College, Liphook

Churcher’s College, Liphook
At Churcher’s College Junior and Senior Schools, we are all too aware of the impact school will have on a child. A class of thirty can easily be taught the mechanics of reading and writing but to teach children to be caring, socially aware, confident and above all happy, the children need much closer everyday contact with adults. They need to feel that they have support and attention to their personal needs and aspirations. A lot is written about the failings of education in this country. One criticism which comes through from employers is that, with our curriculum and exam system, school children are too often given answers to remember rather than problems to solve. Churcher’s College unashamedly strives for and achieves academic excellence; averaging around 76% A and B grades at A level puts Churcher’s very much in the top echelons in the country. Exam certificates are often the passport to the next stage in any child’s career and Churcher’s provides ‘gold-plated’ ones but, at the same time, we develop critical thinkers who have the skills to face life’s problems and solve them.

The difference between school and life is that, in school, you are taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you are given a test that teaches you a lesson. What Churcher’s endeavours to do is to give children challenges so that they may learn from them but always within a caring, supporting and guiding environment where personal and group success is hugely celebrated.

The extraordinary range of experiences at Churcher’s College allows children to find their niche; a niche in which they can excel and enjoy the rewards of success. The classroom opportunities are matched by an extraordinary range outside. 160 involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award this year, 30 at Gold level; 200 in a thriving, three section voluntary Combined Cadet Force; expeditions to Machu Pichu, Mount Kilimanjaro, Nepal and Tibet, Vietnam and Cambodia; unbeaten rugby and netball teams at a range of levels; national and international sports stars, pupils with starring roles in major West End musical productions; racing car successes at Goodwood; celebrated musicians; horse-riding teams and many more exciting avenues to success.

The development of self-esteem underpins everything we do here. A musician is recognised at the same level as an artist; a sportsman or woman is of equal value to an academic; an actor is as important to us as an Arctic explorer. We never forget that you can learn just as much if not more outside the classroom as inside.

From the idyllic Junior School site in Liphook on the borders of Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, the children move to the Senior School just down the road in Petersfield. From 4 - 11 and then 11 - 18 in a co-educational, day school, Churcher’s endeavours to give children the skills that will allow them to succeed in life’s tests.
