Sherfield – roots to grow, wings to fly!

Sherfield, the co-educational independent school for children aged 3 months to 18 years based near Sherfield-on-Loddon, continues to grow from strength to strength.

SherfieldIn September 2008, Baby Gems celebrated its second birthday and now has a significant waiting list.  Baby Gems is a home style baby care unit, in the grounds of Sherfield, for up to 21 children aged from 3 months to 2 years.  As well as offering an holistic approach to childcare and education, they also provide a ‘wrap-around’ service giving peace of mind to parents, knowing their child is being taken care of within a safe and stimulating environment during the day from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm, 48 weeks per year.

Modern foreign languages are an important part of life at Sherfield.  From just 3 months children are introduced to languages, using songs and rhymes, which helps fluency as language skills develop.

From Baby GEMS the children move to the more structured Little GEMS.  Within Little GEMS the children move through a series of classes.  They join Rubies when they are aged around 22 months and then move on Sapphires up to the age of 2½.  The next step is Diamonds up to the age of 3 and then Emerald for over 3 years, until the transition to Pre-Reception.  This new approach has enabled staff to initiate very specific learning goals for all the children, underpinned by the Birth to Five Curriculum guidelines.  In particular, the close relationship between the physical development of children and their cognitive skills is recognised with daily fun activities to enhance brain development.

Throughout the formative years the school continues to provide a stimulating learning environment, giving children a wealth of opportunities and activities to enable them to learn whilst exploring the world around them. Little GEMS is a purpose built nursery. and kindergarten.  As well as light, airy classrooms there is a well-equipped soft play area and quiet library.  The facilities help the children to grow and develop to their full potential.

From the September after their third birthday children move to GEMS Plus which forms part of the main school.  Here the classes cover Pre-Reception to Year 3.  The move to the main building allows the pupils to access ICT, music, PE and language facilities to further enhance their development.

Throughout Sherfield the curriculum is based on the school’s core values of forward thinking, leadership skills, universal values and world citizenship.  This means that whilst academic excellence is still pursued, the emphasis is on preparing pupils for lifelong learning.  All scholars are trained to become active responsible members of a global community, ready to engage in the future with competence and confidence.

The school uses the National Curriculum as the minimum framework by adapting teaching methods to provide a wide variety of courses and qualifications.  For teaching staff the focus is on providing stimulating and forward thinking lessons so that learning is an exciting, challenging and enjoyable experience for all.  A first class academic education is given throughout the school using a blend of traditional teaching with innovative new ideas.  The academic progress and personal development of each pupil is tracked using rigorous assessment programs, enabling parents to have a good understanding of their child’s achievements.

Karen Chard, Assistant Head, says:
“Across all Foundation Stage settings at Sherfield, we provide our children with the highest standards of care and education.  The Early Years team work tirelessly to ensure excellence in all areas and this can be seen in the warm and stimulating environments, caring relationships and rigorous planning for success.  As is the case throughout the school, our central aims are to ensure that all children are happy, confident and achieve the very best they can.”
